Fitting tips
Make the aperture is about 10mm bigger than the external casing size; this is for clearance. Cut ceiling joists and fit trimmers to form the aperture. Try to use screws. Nailing may damage your ceiling. Cut plaster board with a saw. Make sure your aperture has square corners. Remove the ladder from the hatch to make it lighter. Use hardboard or ply as packers. Use size 10 or 12 gauge screws (not nails). Make sure the casing finishes flush with ceiling so the architrave fits. Do not lay the ladder directly on it's face as there is a high possibility that you may scratch the lid. Always lay it on laths and never drag it. Remove the ladder from the hatch to make it lighter. If you are unsure where to cut the ladder it is always best to cut it longer and then trim bits off it until it is the correct length. If the ladder rests on a carpeted floor it is a good idea to fasten a timber plank across the bottom of the ladder so any weight bearing down on the carpet is distributed through the area of the timber plank and not the ladder sides. This will reduce wear on the carpet from the ladder bottom.
